Overview

The Hobbytech CRX2 LC70 Builders Kit Painted Body 313 mm Wheelbase (HT-8-CRX2-LC70) represents a significant leap forward in affordable scale rock crawling for UK enthusiasts. This builders kit combines the latest generation Hobbytech CRX2 chassis platform with a factory-painted LC70 tilt body, delivering genuine scale realism without the premium price tag of fully assembled ready-to-run RC crawlers. Whether you're a seasoned competitor looking to build a custom setup or a hobbyist discovering the world of RC scale climbing, this kit provides the foundation for a truly capable machine.

Redesigned from the ground up, the CRX2 introduces innovative engineering solutions that directly address the challenges scale crawlers face on uneven terrain. The adjustable wheelbase system means you can adapt this platform to fit a wide range of bodies beyond just the included LC70, making it an exceptional investment for builders who want flexibility and longevity. Combined with new anti-torque twist transmission technology, zero-degree Ackerman steering geometry, and robust aluminium Wolf shock absorbers, the CRX2 delivers a level of sophistication previously found only in much more expensive RC cars. This is the ideal choice for UK buyers seeking a quality builders kit RC crawler that rewards patience during assembly with outstanding off-road performance.

The kit ships with everything needed to begin construction: the complete CRX2 chassis, painted LC70 body, 1.9-inch tyres with foam inserts, rims, a comprehensive sticker sheet, and detailed assembly manuals. You'll need to source brushless or brushed electronics separately, allowing you to choose the exact specification that matches your performance goals and budget. Key Features

  • Adjustable Wheelbase System — The CRX2 features a new chassis design with an adjustable wheelbase that can be modified from the standard 313 mm configuration to accommodate a wide variety of body styles. This flexibility means you can upgrade to different bodies in the future without replacing the entire platform, providing exceptional long-term value and build versatility for UK modellers.
  • Anti-Torque Twist Transmission — Unlike conventional single-direction gearboxes, the CRX2 employs a new transmission system where the central driveshafts rotate in opposite directions to counteract torque twist. This eliminates the tendency for wheels to lift during aggressive acceleration, keeping all four tyres in contact with the terrain for maximum traction and stability when climbing steep rock faces.
  • Zero-Degree Ackerman Steering Geometry — New stub axles and realistic central universal joints with treated-steel construction deliver a revolutionary 0° Ackerman angle, meaning the front wheels remain perfectly parallel when cornering. This dramatically improves steering precision and manoeuvrability, allowing smoother line choices through technical sections and more intuitive handling characteristics.
  • Aluminium Wolf Shock Absorbers — The kit includes new 90 mm WOLF-type aluminium shock absorbers with progressive soft springs that support both droop and semi-droop suspension configurations. You can fine-tune your setup by adjusting spring positions and filling the shock bodies with 100 cSt silicone oil, enabling everything from aggressive climbing geometry to realistic scale-appearance builds.
  • Multi-Position Battery Support — A new multi-position battery mounting system allows you to choose different placement locations depending on your desired weight distribution and performance characteristics. The system accommodates various battery sizes and formats, giving you complete control over weight bias for improved handling and hill-climbing ability.
  • Chassis-Mounted Servo Plate — The new CMS servo mounting plate locks the servo directly to the chassis for maximum steering responsiveness and feedback. This rigid mounting system ensures precise control inputs are immediately transmitted to the wheels, eliminating the vague or delayed steering response often found in cheaper RC crawlers.
  • Robust New Front and Rear Axles — The completely redesigned axle and suspension link geometry incorporates new spindle carriers with Panhard support for superior handling geometry and articulation over obstacles. These components are engineered specifically for the demands of serious rock crawling, where reliability and precise geometry are essential.
  • Central Stiffening Bars — New reinforcement bars throughout the chassis resist flex and twist during aggressive off-road use, providing the rigid platform necessary for consistent performance and durability under the stresses of rock crawling. This engineering detail separates quality builders kits from budget alternatives.
  • Hobbytech Climber Tyres — The kit includes new Hobbytech-designed and manufactured Climber tyres (121/45 mm) on 1.9-inch rims with foam inserts. These tyres are specifically engineered for scale crawling applications, offering superior grip on rock and terrain compared to generic tyres. They're even compatible with TRX-4 platforms, providing upgrade flexibility.
  • Factory-Painted LC70 Body — The included tilt body comes fully painted and arrives with a comprehensive sticker sheet, eliminating bodywork preparation time and allowing you to begin assembly immediately. The LC70 is recognised as an iconic scale body shape, delivering authentic aesthetic appeal.

Technical Performance

The Hobbytech CRX2 LC70 represents a comprehensive rethink of scale crawler engineering. At its heart sits a new shaft-driven 4WD planetary gearbox with counter-rotating central driveshafts that actively work against the torque twist effect—the tendency for crawler wheels to lift when driving uphill under power. The new transmission allows the CRX2 to climb with exceptional stability and efficiency, a key advantage when tackling serious rock gardens. The aluminium chassis features side channels with cross-member construction that provides controlled flex without excessive twisting, whilst the rigid CMS servo mounting system ensures steering inputs are translated immediately into precise wheel movement. The 90 mm Wolf shock absorbers are a standout component, offering impressive adjustability through spring positioning and fluid viscosity tuning. The new suspension geometry incorporates realistic universal joints with treated-steel cross-pin construction that combines durability with authentic scale appearance. With an adjustable wheelbase accommodating the standard 313 mm configuration, the CRX2 can be adapted for multiple body styles, making it an exceptionally flexible platform. The kit comes equipped with Climber 121/45 mm tyres featuring foam inserts, which deliver excellent traction whilst maintaining a realistic scale diameter. The platform is designed to accept both brushless and brushed motor setups, with Hobbytech recommending either the KN-40-540-1800-FUS brushless combo or the KN-BRUSH40-CRAWBT and KN-M5540-55T brushed combination. Battery flexibility is excellent, with the multi-position mount accommodating everything from smaller 2S LiPo packs to larger 3S configurations, depending on performance preferences. This level of engineering depth makes the CRX2 suitable for UK enthusiasts who demand reliability and performance without the expense of premium Japanese or American alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hobbytech CRX2 LC70 suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — The CRX2 is an excellent choice for builders with some RC experience, though complete beginners should be prepared for assembly work and electronics installation. This is not a ready-to-run RC car; it requires careful construction and the purchase of separate motor, ESC, servo, battery and radio components. However, once assembled, the intuitive design and adjustable features make it very beginner-friendly to operate. The included detailed manuals guide you through each assembly step, and the modular design means you can easily adjust settings as your skills improve.
  • What battery size does the CRX2 LC70 accept? — The multi-position battery support accommodates various battery sizes and formats, making it compatible with everything from smaller 2S LiPo packs to larger 3S configurations. Hobbytech specifically recommends the KN-LP2S5200 battery. The flexibility of the battery mount means you can experiment with different pack capacities and chemistries to fine-tune weight distribution and runtime characteristics to match your preferences.
  • How does the anti-torque twist system improve climbing performance? — Traditional crawler transmissions drive both front and rear axles in the same rotational direction. When climbing, this creates a torque twist effect where engine torque causes one wheel to lift off the ground, reducing traction. The CRX2 solves this by running central driveshafts in opposite directions, counteracting the torque effect and keeping all four tyres in contact with the terrain. This means more consistent traction, fewer wheel lifts, and the ability to climb steeper obstacles without losing ground contact.
  • What is the difference between the droop and semi-droop shock configurations? — Semi-droop setup uses a small soft spring at the shock bottom and medium soft spring at the top, offering a balanced approach suitable for general climbing and crawling. Full droop configuration reverses these spring sizes, installing the medium spring at the bottom and small spring at the top, creating a more extreme stance that enhances scale realism and provides different suspension characteristics over obstacles. Both configurations are fully supported by the Wolf shocks included in this kit.
  • Is the LC70 body compatible with other chassis platforms? — The LC70 tilt body is specifically designed for the CRX2 with its 313 mm wheelbase configuration. The CRX2's adjustable wheelbase feature is designed to accommodate multiple body styles, so whilst the included LC70 is optimised for this platform, the flexibility to fit different bodies in the future is one of the CRX2's main advantages.
  • What tools and skills are required to build the CRX2 LC70? — You'll need standard RC hobby tools: screwdrivers, hex keys, and a few specialist items like a servo tester or radio system to calibrate steering. Basic mechanical knowledge of RC cars is helpful, though the comprehensive manual guides you through each step. Assembly time is typically 4-6 hours for experienced builders, longer for newcomers.
  • Can I upgrade the CRX2 to brushless power? — Yes, the platform fully supports brushless motor setups. Hobbytech recommends the KN-40-540-1800-FUS brushless combo, which provides modern power delivery, reduced maintenance, and excellent efficiency. The multi-position battery mount and flexible electronics bay mean you can integrate a brushless system easily.
  • What makes the Climber tyres different from standard RC tyres? — Climber tyres are specifically engineered for scale rock crawling, with tread patterns and rubber compounds optimised for grip on rock and uneven terrain rather than speed or road surfaces. The 121/45 mm size with foam inserts provides excellent compliance over obstacles whilst maintaining a realistic scale diameter. They're even compatible with TRX-4 platforms, offering future upgrade flexibility.
