Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the top speed of the Traxxas XRT and what factors affect it? — The XRT is capable of reaching 60+ mph with two 4S 6700mAh LiPo batteries and the included optional speed gearing. Top speed is influenced by battery voltage and capacity, motor timing, gearing ratios, tyre condition, surface type (hard-packed surfaces deliver higher speeds), air temperature, and total vehicle weight including the operator's battery choice. Competitive drivers often experiment with alternative gear ratios to optimise acceleration versus top speed based on their specific track conditions.
- Is the Traxxas XRT suitable for beginners? — No, the XRT is explicitly rated as Skill Level 5 and is designed exclusively for advanced RC enthusiasts and competitive racers. This vehicle requires experience with high-performance brushless electronics, proper LiPo battery handling and charging procedures, understanding of 8S power systems, advanced driving skills at extreme speeds, and knowledge of vehicle tuning and maintenance. Beginners should start with lower Skill Level vehicles and progress to the XRT once they've mastered fundamental RC driving and maintenance skills.
- What batteries does the XRT need and how long do they last? — The XRT requires dual 4-Cell (4S) 6700mAh LiPo batteries for the optimal 60+ mph performance configuration, providing a nominal voltage of 14.8V per battery when paired in the dual compartment design. Traxxas specifically recommends the Power Cell LiPo batteries (TRX2890X) or the Dual 4s Completer Pack (TRX2997T). Runtime depends on driving style, terrain, battery condition, and load, but typically provides 15-25 minutes of continuous running on a fully charged pair of fresh batteries. Racing applications with aggressive acceleration and high-speed driving will reduce runtime, whilst steady cruising extends battery life. Always allow batteries to cool between charges for safety and longevity.
- Is the XRT waterproof and suitable for wet UK weather racing? — Yes, the XRT features a waterproof VXL-8s electronic speed control and waterproof servo, making it suitable for water crossings and wet conditions common in British off-road racing. However, whilst the electronics are waterproof, the composite nylon chassis and many mechanical components are not, so you should avoid complete submersion and rinse the vehicle with fresh water after water crossings to prevent corrosion of metal components and bearing contamination.
- What is the difference between the XRT and the XRT Ultimate? — The XRT Ultimate (TRX78097-4) represents a further enhanced version with additional performance upgrades and premium components beyond the standard XRT, though specific differences would be detailed in the XRT Ultimate product specifications. Both vehicles share the same core 1:6 scale platform, 8S power system, and race-truck design philosophy, but buyers should compare detailed specifications to understand the performance and feature differences between the two models.
- How do I charge the LiPo batteries safely? — The Traxxas EZ-Peak Live 4s charger (TRX2971) is specifically recommended and features iD battery recognition technology that automatically identifies authentic Traxxas batteries and applies the correct charging profile. Always charge batteries in a dedicated LiPo safety sack (such as the Voltz Charge Vault), never leave charging batteries unattended, charge in a fireproof location away from flammable materials, and ensure the charger is on a non-flammable surface. For 8S systems using dual 4S batteries, the EZ-Peak Live charger handles each battery independently for balanced charging. Never overcharge batteries or attempt to charge damaged cells.
- What maintenance does the XRT require? — Regular maintenance includes checking all fasteners and servo saver tension, cleaning the air filter after dusty running, inspecting bearings for dirt or sand contamination, checking tyre condition and grip, inspecting the body for cracks, ensuring all driveline components are tight and properly meshed, cleaning mud and debris from the chassis and suspension, rinsing with fresh water after wet conditions, and allowing the motor and ESC to cool fully between running sessions. Periodic deep cleaning of sealed bearings and preventative component inspections will maximise the lifespan of your XRT.
- Can I upgrade or modify the XRT with different components? — Yes, the XRT shares much of its design with the X-Maxx platform, and Traxxas offers an extensive range of optional components including alternative gearing, upgraded shocks, different tyre compounds, body options in various colours, and performance parts. Check the Traxxas parts catalogue and specialist RC retailers for the full range of available upgrades, and ensure any modifications are compatible with the 8S power system and the vehicle's specific architecture.
- How do I achieve the maximum 60+ mph speed? — Maximum speed requires dual fully-charged 4S 6700mAh LiPo batteries (delivering 14.8V total), the included optional speed gearing installed, the vehicle at minimum weight (no passenger or accessories), driving on smooth hard-packed surfaces with optimal grip, optimal motor timing settings, and an experienced driver with smooth throttle application. Speed will be reduced on uneven terrain, softer surfaces, cooler temperatures, or with partially charged batteries. Experiment with gearing adjustments to find the optimal setup for your specific driving conditions.
