Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a 2300Kv brushless marine motor and higher Kv alternatives? — Kv (kilovolt) rating determines how many RPM the motor produces per volt of battery voltage applied. A 2300Kv motor spins at 2,300 RPM per volt, making it a mid-range option. Lower Kv motors (like 1100Kv or 1200Kv) spin slower but produce more torque, whilst higher Kv motors (3200Kv or 4500Kv) spin faster but produce less torque. The 2300Kv rating of this Firma motor provides an excellent compromise between speed and power, making it ideal for most recreational marine RC applications without excessive current draw.
  • Is the Spektrum Firma 2300Kv suitable for beginners to RC boating? — Yes, this motor is very beginner-friendly for those new to brushless RC marine propulsion. The 2300Kv rating provides predictable, linear power delivery that's easy to control, and the brushless construction means there's no maintenance like brush replacement. However, you will need to purchase an appropriate ESC (electronic speed controller), battery, and charger separately—this motor is not a ready-to-run complete system on its own. If you're entirely new to RC boating, we recommend speaking with our experienced team at RC Model Shop to ensure you select compatible components.
  • What battery does the Firma 2300Kv marine motor require? — This motor is compatible with 2S, 3S, and 4S LiPo (lithium polymer) battery packs. A 2S configuration delivers 7.4 volts and produces 17,020 RPM at full throttle, whilst a 4S pack delivers 14.8 volts and produces 34,040 RPM. Most users find that a 3S or 4S LiPo battery provides the optimal balance of runtime, power delivery, and weight for typical marine RC applications. The specific battery capacity you choose will depend on your boat size, desired runtime, and the power handling of your ESC.
  • What ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) is recommended for this motor? — Spektrum recommends pairing this motor with a 100-amp brushless marine ESC to take full advantage of its 75-amp continuous current rating and to unlock the integral surface brakes functionality. Options like the Spektrum Jetstream 100 Amp Brushless Marine ESC are specifically designed to work seamlessly with Firma marine motors and provide the responsive throttle control and braking features you need for competitive or recreational boating.
  • What makes the outrunner design preferable for marine RC applications? — Outrunner motors feature a rotating outer bell with permanent magnets that spin around a stationary armature core. This design is inherently more efficient than inrunner motors and produces smoother power delivery with less cogging torque. For RC boats, this translates to better acceleration feel, more predictable throttle response, and the ability to extract maximum power from your battery before voltage sag becomes excessive. Outrunner motors also run cooler during sustained operations, making them ideal for long boating sessions.
  • Does this motor come with propellers or adapters included? — No, this motor is sold as a bare motor only. You will need to source a propeller designed for your specific boat hull and purchase a 5mm shaft adapter to connect the propeller to the motor shaft. The standard 5mm shaft diameter accommodates a wide range of readily available marine propeller adapters.
  • Is this motor waterproof? — The Firma 2300Kv motor itself is constructed with quality materials that resist corrosion, but it is not sealed in the manner of fully waterproof ESCs. Motor internals are standard brushless construction exposed to the air inside your RC boat's hull. For maximum longevity in saltwater environments, we recommend rinsing your RC boat with fresh water after each use and allowing components to dry thoroughly. If operating in saltwater, periodically inspect the motor for salt crystal buildup and clean as needed.
  • How does the integral surface brakes function work? — The integral surface brakes feature works in conjunction with a compatible marine ESC. When activated through your transmitter, the ESC can reverse the motor's magnetic field polarity to create a braking torque that rapidly slows the boat's propeller. This provides more responsive braking than simply cutting throttle and allows for true reverse thrust—essential for precise manoeuvring and emergency stops. Your chosen ESC must support this function; not all ESCs activate surface brakes the same way, so consult your ESC manual for specific programming instructions.
  • What is the weight and dimensions of this motor? — The Firma 2300Kv weighs 8.3 ounces (245 grams), making it relatively lightweight for its power output. Dimensionally, it measures 1.68 inches (43mm) in outer diameter and 2.6 inches (66mm) in overall length, with a 5mm shaft that extends 1 inch (25mm) from the motor body. These compact dimensions make it suitable for most RC boat engine bays without requiring custom modifications.
