Key Features

  • Plug-and-Play Integration — This GPS module connects directly to SAFE Plus-equipped Spektrum receivers without requiring calibration or firmware updates, meaning installation is straightforward and you can begin flying with enhanced safety features immediately after connecting the unit.
  • Auto-Land Mode — The autonomous landing capability enables your aircraft to return to and land near its takeoff point with minimal pilot intervention, providing peace of mind during test flights and training sessions where landing precision is critical.
  • Virtual Fence Technology — Preset GPS boundaries prevent your aircraft from flying beyond defined areas, protecting your model from flyaways and helping you maintain controlled flight operations within safe zones, particularly valuable when flying in populated areas or near obstacles.
  • Holding Pattern Functionality — Your aircraft can automatically circle overhead at a safe altitude whilst you assess the situation or prepare for manual landing, giving you more time to respond to changing conditions and reducing the likelihood of panic-induced pilot error.
  • Return-to-Home Logic — If your aircraft breaches the geofence boundary, the GPS module automatically initiates landing procedures, effectively creating a safety system that prevents loss of your model and ensures recovery even in challenging circumstances.
  • Compact Form Factor — The module's minimal size and weight allow internal mounting with negligible impact on aircraft balance and handling characteristics, ensuring your trainer aircraft maintains its designed flight envelope and responsiveness.
  • Internal Compass Module — Built-in compass functionality supports heading calibration for accurate directional awareness, enabling the GPS system to provide reliable navigation data and ensuring the aircraft understands its orientation relative to the takeoff point.
  • SAFE Plus Compatibility — Engineered specifically for Spektrum receivers equipped with SAFE Plus technology, this module unlocks location-based flight logic that works in harmony with the already-trusted flight stabilisation and assistance systems pilots rely on.

Technical Performance

The Spektrum P-SPMA3173 represents professional-grade GPS technology condensed into a lightweight, accessible form factor suitable for trainer-class RC aircraft. The module's engineering emphasises reliability and ease of use, with internal compass calibration support ensuring accurate heading information even in varied magnetic environments. The GPS receiver processes satellite signals to establish precise geofencing boundaries, calculate altitude and descent rates for autonomous landing procedures, and maintain awareness of the aircraft's position relative to the takeoff point throughout the flight. The return-to-home logic processes GPS data continuously, allowing the system to make intelligent decisions about when and how to initiate landing procedures. The compact design is optimised for internal mounting within Spektrum-equipped airframes, keeping external profile minimal and avoiding the aerodynamic penalties that might otherwise accompany the addition of external modules. The system operates autonomously once activated, requiring no real-time communication between the transmitter and the GPS module during automated manoeuvres, meaning even signal dropouts will not interrupt the execution of autonomous return and landing sequences. This makes the P-SPMA3173 a genuinely practical solution for UK-based RC pilots seeking to add intelligent flight capabilities to their training aircraft without compromising reliability or adding unnecessary complexity to their flight operations.
