Technical Performance

The Losi S900S 1/5 Scale Steering Servo represents the pinnacle of large-scale RC servo engineering, combining metal gear durability with digital control precision. This servo operates across a dual voltage range, delivering 416 oz-in of torque at 6V and 550 oz-in at 7.4V, making it compatible with both regulated and unregulated power systems on modern 1/5-scale RC trucks. The dual ball bearing construction minimises internal friction and provides superior support during high-torque steering inputs, a critical advantage when controlling vehicles weighing over 16 kilograms across rough off-road terrain. The metal gear train ensures efficient torque transfer whilst resisting the deformation and wear that plague plastic-geared alternatives, particularly in applications involving repeated high-impact steering corrections. Speed response is exceptional for a servo of this class, achieving 0.21-second response times at 6V and 0.17 seconds at 7.4V, enabling drivers to execute precise steering inputs without lag. The servo's digital control circuitry delivers smooth, linear throttle response and eliminates dead zones, providing the steering precision required for competitive racing and technical obstacle courses. Built to withstand the extreme demands of 1/5-scale off-road driving, where steering loads regularly exceed 500 ounces-inches, the S900S is engineered with reinforced internal components and a sealed housing that protects critical electronics from dust and moisture. The universal connector ensures compatibility with all Spektrum and DSMR-based receiver systems, making this servo a universal solution for any 1/5-scale RC platform requiring professional-grade steering authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Losi S900S suitable for 1/5-scale RC monster trucks and buggies? — Yes, absolutely. The S900S is specifically engineered as original equipment for the Losi 5IVE-T 1/5-scale truck and is purpose-built to handle the extreme steering demands of large-scale RC vehicles. Its 550 oz-in torque output at 7.4V provides more than sufficient steering authority to control heavy-duty off-road platforms, making it ideal for monster truck bashing, racing, and technical driving.
  • What voltage should I run this servo on? — The S900S operates optimally at 7.4V (2S LiPo voltage) where it delivers maximum torque of 550 oz-in and fastest response time of 0.17 seconds. However, it is also fully compatible with 6V power supplies, where it still produces a formidable 416 oz-in of torque and 0.21-second response time, making it suitable for setups using voltage regulators or alternative power systems.
  • Can I use the S900S in the throttle position instead of steering? — Yes. Many users deploy the S900S in throttle servo positions when they require additional torque beyond the stock throttle servo, or when running unregulated lithium polymer batteries without a voltage regulator. The servo's high torque output makes it particularly effective for precise throttle control on large-scale vehicles.
  • Does this servo include a horn and linkage? — No, the S900S servo body is sold separately from the servo horn and steering linkage. For Losi 5IVE-T applications, Losi part number LOSB5900 is the stock servo horn and linkage assembly specifically engineered for compatibility with this servo.
  • What makes the metal gear construction important? — Metal gears are significantly more durable than plastic alternatives, resisting deformation, stripping, and wear during high-torque steering inputs. For large-scale 1/5 RC vehicles that regularly experience steering loads exceeding 400-500 oz-in, metal gears are essential for long-term reliability and consistent performance.
  • Is the S900S compatible with all RC receivers? — The S900S features a universal servo connector and is fully compatible with Spektrum DSMR receivers, the standard radio system in most large-scale Losi platforms. It will work with any modern receiver equipped with standard servo connector pins.
  • How does dual ball bearing construction improve servo performance? — Dual bearings support the output shaft at both ends, minimising friction and backlash whilst distributing load more evenly across the servo's internal structure. This results in smoother operation, faster response times, and significantly improved durability under continuous high-torque steering inputs characteristic of 1/5-scale driving.
  • What is the difference between the S900S and standard-scale servos? — The S900S is purpose-designed for 1/5-scale applications with torque output approximately 8-10 times greater than standard 1/10-scale servos, dual ball bearing support (versus single bearing in many smaller servos), metal gear construction (versus plastic in economy servos), and a larger physical form factor to accommodate the higher internal forces generated during large-scale driving.
