Key Features

  • Patented Staggered Pole Rotor Design — The motor utilises Hobbywing's exclusive staggered pole rotor configuration, which dramatically reduces cogging effect and torque ripple compared to conventional rock crawler motors. This engineering innovation results in smoother operation with virtually no jerking or pulsation, cleaner deceleration characteristics, and seamless transitions between power and braking. The effect is particularly noticeable during precise low-speed manoeuvres and technical climbing, where the ultra-smooth power delivery allows you to maintain exact control over your vehicle's position and movement on challenging terrain.
  • FOC (Field-Oriented Control) Technology — This cutting-edge sensor system provides super-linear throttle response and exceptional torque characteristics that represent a generational leap forward from standard brushless motor designs. FOC technology enables the motor and ESC to work together with unprecedented accuracy, matching the motor's RPM directly to your throttle position under all driving conditions, whether climbing uphill, descending downhill, or navigating variable terrain. The system maintains constant awareness of motor speed and position, allowing closed-loop speed control that keeps your crawler stable and responsive in ways traditional open-loop systems cannot achieve.
  • Built-in High-Precision Magnetic Encoder — Rather than relying on standard Hall-effect sensors, the XERUN AXE540 incorporates a high-precision magnetic encoder that provides far more detailed and accurate feedback to the ESC about motor speed, position, and performance. This superior sensor information allows the ESC to make more intelligent control decisions, resulting in improved overall efficiency, better power management, extended runtime on battery charges, and more precise motor control across the entire RPM range. The magnetic encoder ensures consistent, reliable feedback in all conditions.
  • Complete Waterproof System — The motor features comprehensive waterproof design with sealed construction throughout, allowing reliable operation in wet and muddy environments. The innovative sensor harness incorporates an o-ring sealed, screw-together connector design that prevents water, mud, and dust ingress whilst remaining simple to connect and disconnect. Unlike older designs that required additional waterproofing measures or upgrades, the AXE system arrives ready for all-weather operation out of the box. After use in particularly harsh conditions, simply dismantle, clean the motor, and apply lubricant to the bearings to maintain peak performance.
  • Extremely Efficient Power Delivery — The combination of FOC control, the staggered pole rotor design, and the high-precision magnetic encoder creates an exceptionally efficient motor that extracts maximum performance from every amp-hour of battery capacity. This efficiency translates directly into extended runtime—you'll experience dramatically longer operating sessions on the same battery pack compared to traditional brushless crawler motors, whilst maintaining exceptional power and throttle response throughout the discharge cycle.
  • Ultra-Silent Operation — One of the most noticeable benefits of FOC technology is the elimination of annoying PWM (pulse-width modulation) noise that traditional brushless motors produce. The XERUN AXE540 runs with remarkable silence, allowing you to hear mechanical feedback from your vehicle and concentrate fully on technique without distracting electronic noise.
  • 4-Pole Motor Configuration — The motor utilises a 4-pole stator design optimised for crawler applications, providing the ideal balance of torque characteristics, efficiency, and responsiveness required for technical rock crawling and trail driving.
  • Sealed Bearing Construction — Both the front and rear bearings are sealed units (D5×D13×t4 695DD specification), protecting internal components from water, mud, and contamination whilst minimising friction and ensuring smooth, reliable rotation.

Technical Performance

The XERUN AXE540 1800Kv FOC Sensored Brushless Motor is engineered to exacting specifications for 1/10th scale rock crawler and trail applications. The motor measures 36.0mm in outer diameter and 48.8mm in length, fitting standard 540-size motor cavities found in most modern crawler platforms. The 3.175mm shaft diameter (0.125 inches) is the industry-standard specification for 1/10th scale crawler motors, ensuring compatibility with most motor mounts and gearbox input shafts. Weighing just 173 grams, the motor offers excellent power-to-weight ratio, contributing to overall vehicle performance and handling characteristics. The 1800Kv rating indicates motor speed constant—this translates to approximately 1800 RPM per volt applied, positioning this variant in the ideal range for balanced torque and speed delivery across 2S and 3S LiPo battery configurations (which provide 7.4V and 11.1V nominal respectively). The motor draws approximately 1.2A at no-load conditions on full throttle, indicating efficient operation with minimal parasitic losses. The motor operates on 2-3S LiPo (7.4V–11.1V) or 6-9 cell NiMH battery packs, providing flexibility in power source selection. The brushless design eliminates brush wear and maintenance requirements whilst the sensored architecture with magnetic encoder provides the feedback necessary for FOC control algorithms to optimise performance. The sealed construction throughout the motor body, combined with the innovative waterproof sensor connector, ensures reliable operation in wet, muddy, and dusty conditions typical of UK trail and rock crawling venues. This motor is specifically designed to pair exclusively with the XERUN AXE FOC ESC, which provides the advanced control circuitry necessary to unlock the motor's full potential through FOC algorithms.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is FOC technology and why does it matter for crawler motors? — FOC (Field-Oriented Control) is an advanced motor control algorithm that provides far superior precision compared to traditional brushless motor control. Rather than simply switching power on and off at high frequencies, FOC continuously monitors motor speed and position through the magnetic encoder and adjusts power delivery in real-time to match your throttle input exactly. This results in smoother acceleration, cleaner deceleration, perfect speed holding on hills, and exceptional linearity across the entire throttle range. For crawlers specifically, this means you can place your vehicle exactly where you want it on technical terrain with unprecedented precision, making nearly impossible climbs and manoeuvres achievable through superior control.
  • Can I use this motor with my existing ESC or standard brushless speed controller? — No. The XERUN AXE540 motor is specifically designed to work exclusively with the XERUN AXE FOC ESC. The motor cannot be used with standard brushless speed controllers, as the FOC algorithms that unlock the motor's performance are proprietary to the AXE system. This integrated design ensures optimal performance and reliability but does require pairing with the correct ESC.
  • Is this motor suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — Whilst the XERUN AXE system is sophisticated technologically, it is actually exceptionally beginner-friendly in practical use. The FOC system makes the motor easier to control than traditional brushless setups, with more predictable throttle response and smoother operation. However, the motor itself is a component requiring the separate AXE ESC and integration into a complete crawler platform, so it's best suited to hobbyists with some mechanical experience or those upgrading existing crawlers. The technology is transparent to the user—you simply enjoy the superior performance and control without needing to understand the engineering behind it.
  • What battery does this motor need, and what runtime should I expect? — The XERUN AXE540 1800Kv operates on 2-3S LiPo (7.4V–11.1V nominal) or 6-9 cell NiMH battery packs. The 1800Kv variant is optimised for 2-3S configurations, making it extremely versatile. Runtime varies depending on driving style, terrain, battery capacity, and load, but the exceptional efficiency of the FOC system extends runtime considerably compared to traditional brushless motors—expect runtime measured in tens of minutes on typical battery capacities, with exact duration depending on your specific setup and driving intensity.
  • How waterproof is the motor and can I use it in wet conditions? — The XERUN AXE540 features comprehensive waterproof design with sealed motor construction and an innovative o-ring sealed, screw-together sensor connector. The system is designed for all-weather and all-terrain operation and will tolerate wet conditions, muddy tracks, and dusty environments. However, after use in particularly harsh conditions, it is recommended to dismantle the motor, clean all components, and apply lubricant to the bearings to maintain reliability and longevity. The sealed design eliminates the need for additional waterproofing upgrades or complicated assembly steps.
  • What is the difference between the 1800Kv and other AXE540 variants like the 1200Kv and 2300Kv? — The different Kv ratings within the AXE540 family allow tuning of the motor's speed and torque characteristics to suit different vehicle weights, gearing, and driving preferences. The 1200Kv variant delivers maximum torque with lower top speed, ideal for heavier crawlers or setups prioritising climbing ability. The 1800Kv (this model) provides balanced torque and speed, suitable for most crawler platforms and offering versatility across various applications. The 2300Kv variant delivers higher speed with slightly reduced torque, ideal for lighter crawlers or those prioritising mobility. All variants benefit from identical FOC technology and staggered pole rotor design—the choice depends on your specific vehicle and driving goals.
  • Does this motor include all necessary connectors and cables? — The motor arrives with the waterproof sensor harness pre-installed and ready to connect to the XERUN AXE ESC. The motor does not include power connectors—power is delivered from the ESC to the motor through internal leads. You will need the XERUN AXE ESC (which includes appropriate power leads) to operate the motor. If you require extended sensor harness length for your installation, the XERUN AXE Extension Wire Set is available separately.
  • What bearing specifications does this motor use? — Both the front and rear bearings are sealed units with the specification D5×D13×t4 (695DD), which are precision rolling element bearings optimised for brushless motor applications. The sealed design protects bearings from contamination whilst minimising friction.
  • Is this motor compatible with Traxxas TRX-4 and similar platforms? — Yes. The XERUN AXE540 1800Kv motor is compatible with most modern 1/10th scale crawler platforms that accept 540-size motors with 3.175mm shafts, including Traxxas TRX-4 variants (K10 Cheyenne, Ford F-150 Ranger XLT, K5 Blazer, Nissan Pathfinder, Bronco, Defender, and Sport models).
