Overview

The Tamiya 1998 Ford Escort Custom (TT-02) TAM58691 is a premium 1/10 scale RC car that brings the iconic Ford Escort Mk.6 three-door hatchback to life with authentic custom street-spec styling. This is an assembly kit rather than a ready-to-run RC car, offering experienced hobbyists and enthusiasts the satisfaction of building their own machine whilst ensuring every component is factory-assembled and quality-controlled by Tamiya, one of the world's most trusted RC manufacturers. The model celebrates the golden era of rally cars by presenting a customised interpretation of the legendary 1998 Ford Escort, featuring aggressive body modifications including blister fenders, a purposeful front spoiler, and a distinctive rear wing that give it genuine visual presence whether on display or tearing around your local RC track.

This RC touring car is perfect for anyone serious about RC hobbies in the UK who wants a model that combines authentic automotive heritage with genuine on-road performance. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor looking to expand your collection, or an intermediate builder eager to develop your skills with a recognised brand, the Tamiya 58691 delivers the quality, precision engineering and genuine driving dynamics you'd expect from a name synonymous with excellence. The clear polycarbonate body allows you to showcase your painting and customisation skills, whilst the robust TT-02 chassis provides a stable, predictable platform that rewards smooth driving technique. With its shaft-driven 4WD system, independent double wishbone suspension and adjustable performance settings, this is a serious contender for on-road racing and weekend bashing alike.

The Tamiya Ford Escort Custom stands out because it combines period-authentic styling with modern engineering principles. Unlike many RC cars that prioritise speed alone, this model emphasises balanced handling, ease of maintenance and genuine driving satisfaction. The TT-02 chassis has proven itself across countless Tamiya releases, making it a proven platform with a deep ecosystem of upgrade parts and tuning options available from specialist retailers across the UK.

Key Features

  • Clear 1.0mm Polycarbonate Body — The shell is moulded from durable polycarbonate that resists impacts during crashes whilst remaining transparent enough to showcase your interior detailing and paint work. The lightweight material reduces unsprung weight and helps maintain the car's handling balance without compromising structural rigidity or aesthetic appeal.
  • Authentic Street-Spec Custom Styling — Factory-fitted blister fenders, front spoiler and rear wing capture the aggressive visual character of the 1998 Ford Escort with genuine automotive authenticity. These components are separately injection-moulded rather than cast as a single piece, allowing for precise fitment and individual replacement if damaged during spirited driving.
  • Separately Moulded Side Mirrors and Rear Wing — Dedicated plastic parts for the side mirrors and rear wing add visual depth and realism to the finished model without complicating assembly or compromising structural strength. The separate wing design allows for easy removal during maintenance or transport.
  • Complete Stickers and Masking Stickers — Supplied stickers enable authentic livery application whilst masking stickers support clean paint boundaries for professional-looking results. This enables builders to create show-quality finishes without specialist airbrush equipment or paint booth access.
  • Shaft-Driven 4WD Chassis with Longitudinal Layout — The proven TT-02 platform employs shaft-driven four-wheel drive with a longitudinal motor and battery arrangement that optimises weight distribution for excellent stability during high-speed cornering and off-camber sections. This configuration delivers balanced understeer-free handling that rewards smooth inputs and maintains grip across varying tarmac surfaces.
  • 4-Wheel Double Wishbone Independent Suspension — The suspension uses identical left and right suspension arms and uprights, dramatically simplifying maintenance and spare part inventory. This symmetrical design ensures predictable handling characteristics and makes field adjustments straightforward, an essential feature for competitive racers who need to adapt settings between heats.
  • Adjustable Ground Clearance for Multiple Setups — The TT-02 platform offers two distinct ground clearance settings, allowing you to raise the suspension for rally-stage specifications or lower it for on-road tarmac racing. This versatility means a single chassis can be configured for multiple driving environments without requiring different platform purchases.
  • Front and Rear 4-Bevel Resin Differentials — The differential system uses resin construction balanced with four-bevel engagement patterns, providing smooth power distribution across all four wheels whilst resisting lock-up during aggressive acceleration. The resin material offers a sweet spot between durability and progressive slip characteristics that intermediate drivers find immediately rewarding.
  • 3-Piece Steering Tie-Rod with Resin Ball Links — The steering linkage employs separate three-piece construction with precision resin ball links at every joint, creating smooth comfortable steering motion with minimal friction or play. This design allows for fine geometry adjustment and individual component replacement if damage occurs.
  • Front and Rear Friction Dampers — Friction dampers manage suspension movement with adjustable resistance, allowing tuners to fine-tune ride height, body roll and cornering response without the complexity of oil shocks. This approach suits builders and recreational users who want genuine suspension performance without specialised shock tuning knowledge.
  • White ABS Dish Wheels with Treaded Street Tyres — Classic white dish wheels moulded in ABS plastic pair with treaded semi-pneumatic street tyres, creating an authentic vintage touring car aesthetic whilst delivering predictable grip characteristics on clean tarmac. The tread pattern ensures consistent performance across varying surfaces and climates, crucial for UK drivers experiencing frequent weather variation.
  • Brake Disc-Shaped Wheel Hubs — The wheel hubs are sculpted to resemble disc brakes, adding authentic mechanical detail that elevates the finished model's visual credibility and demonstrates Tamiya's attention to scale accuracy. This level of finishing detail reflects the care invested throughout the entire design.
  • Type 540 Brushed Motor — The included Torque Tuned electric motor delivers accessible, forgiving power delivery suited to intermediate drivers who value smooth acceleration and progressive throttle response over raw speed. The brushed motor requires no specialised ESC programming and tolerates varied battery types, ideal for modellers still developing their skills.
  • Electronic Speed Controller Included — An ESC is provided for ready-to-assemble operation, managing throttle and braking response with smooth consistent control characteristics. The included unit removes the need for separate ESC purchase, reducing the barrier to entry for builders transitioning from simpler RTR cars.
  • Bathtub-Type Frame Chassis — The rigid bathtub frame construction provides excellent torsional stiffness whilst keeping weight centralised, maintaining composure during aggressive driving whilst resisting damage from kerb strikes and minor impacts that might damage conventional frame designs.
  • Highly Adaptable Gear Ratio System — The standard 8.27:1 ratio suits general-purpose driving, but the TT-02 platform supports nine additional ratios ranging from 11.38:1 to 7.28:1, achievable through separately-sold pinion swaps. This extensive adjustment range allows match the gearing to your driving style, track layout or preferred top speed without frame modifications.
  • Stylish Front Bumper Supports — The front bumper uses form-fitted support structures that balance protective functionality with visual authenticity, avoiding the bulky appearance of over-engineered designs while maintaining genuine crash protection during competitive racing and bashing sessions.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya 58691 Ford Escort Custom is engineered as a genuine on-road touring car rather than a simplified basher, delivering authentic performance through proven chassis engineering. The TT-02 platform represents decades of Tamiya expertise in shaft-driven 4WD systems, employing a longitudinal battery and motor arrangement that optimises weight distribution and creates intuitive handling characteristics that reward smooth driving technique. The 1/10 scale dimensions (425mm length, 189mm width, 145mm height) with a 257mm wheelbase create a stable, predictable platform that tracks straight and corners with genuine mechanical composure. The Type 540 Torque Tuned brushed motor provides consistent, progressive power delivery rather than spine-snapping acceleration, making it forgiving for drivers developing their throttle control and corner entry technique. Power is transmitted through the shaft-driven 4WD system with front and rear 4-bevel resin differentials, ensuring smooth power distribution without the lock-up characteristics that plague poorly-tuned rival systems. The suspension employs 4-wheel independent double wishbone geometry with friction dampers front and rear, allowing precise tuning through damper adjustment without requiring specialised shock expertise. The clear 1.0mm polycarbonate body manufactured in the UK tradition of durable construction protects the chassis whilst remaining light enough to maintain performance and allowing visual inspection of internal components. White ABS dish wheels paired with treaded semi-pneumatic street tyres deliver authentic touring car aesthetics combined with predictable grip characteristics across varying tarmac conditions common throughout UK tracks and driveways. The bathtub-type frame provides exceptional torsional stiffness whilst resisting kerb strikes and impact damage that might damage conventional frame designs. Assembly quality benefits from Tamiya's manufacturing expertise, with all plastic components injection-moulded to precise tolerances ensuring seamless fitment and genuine durability through extended use. The included Electronic Speed Controller handles throttle and braking response with smooth, consistent characteristics suited to the motor's power delivery. With the standard 8.27:1 gear ratio providing balanced performance across general-purpose driving, or the option to select from nine alternative ratios (ranging from 11.38:1 to 7.28:1) through separately-sold pinions, the platform adapts to individual driving preferences and track characteristics without requiring frame modifications or complex tuning adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya 58691 Ford Escort Custom suitable for beginners to RC car building? — This is classified as Skill Level 3, indicating intermediate builder capability rather than absolute beginner level. If you have previous experience building simpler RC kits or possess basic mechanical aptitude, you'll find this assembly kit straightforward and rewarding. The TT-02 chassis uses identical left and right suspension components simplifying assembly and maintenance compared to asymmetrical designs. However, complete novices might benefit from watching YouTube assembly guides or joining a local RC club where experienced members can provide hands-on guidance. The reward of building your own machine with quality materials makes the effort genuinely worthwhile for anyone committed to RC hobbying in the UK.
  • What radio system and battery specifications does the Tamiya 58691 require? — You'll need a 2-channel R/C radio system with Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) capability, a servo for steering, and a battery pack suitable for Type 540 motor operation. The transmitter requires R6/AA/UM3 batteries (minimum 2x for power). The included ESC handles throttle and braking response, but you must source the radio system, servo, battery pack and charger separately as these represent individual buyer preferences regarding budget, brand loyalty and performance characteristics. Specialist UK RC retailers stock complete radio systems from brands including Futaba, Spektrum and others, often with bundle discounts when purchased alongside the chassis kit.
  • What makes the TT-02 chassis special compared to other Tamiya touring cars? — The TT-02 represents Tamiya's refined approach to shaft-driven 4WD touring cars, offering exceptional adaptability through two different wheelbase options, two ground clearance settings, two tread configurations and ten possible gear ratios. This versatility means a single chassis can be optimised for rally stages, on-road racing, drifting with optional kit conversions, or general weekend bashing without requiring different platform purchases. The identical left and right suspension components dramatically simplify maintenance and spare parts inventory. The longitudinal motor and battery arrangement optimises weight distribution creating genuinely balanced handling that rewards smooth inputs. These engineering decisions explain why the TT-02 appears across dozens of Tamiya releases spanning saloons, rally cars, sports cars and classic vehicles—the chassis simply works superbly regardless of bodyshell.
  • Can I upgrade and customise the Tamiya 58691 with aftermarket parts? — Absolutely, and this represents a genuine strength of the TT-02 platform. Tamiya manufactures an extensive catalogue of hop-up option parts specifically engineered for TT-02 compatibility, allowing suspension geometry adjustments, bearing upgrades, lighter components and performance enhancements. Additionally, specialist UK retailers stock aftermarket options from brands including Yokomo, Schumacher and others. The TT-02 enjoys broad aftermarket support across the RC community, meaning forums and YouTube channels contain detailed tuning guides allowing you to progress from basic assembly through competition-level configuration.
  • How does the clear polycarbonate body differ from pre-painted alternative models? — The transparent polycarbonate allows you to showcase your painting skills and apply custom liveries matching your preferred design aesthetic. Some builders view this as an opportunity for genuine customisation, whilst others prefer pre-painted options. The TT-02 platform receives regular releases in both clear and pre-painted variants, so alternative versions may be available if you prefer finished bodywork ready for immediate running. The clear approach does require painting before operation, representing additional time and cost, but many enthusiasts genuinely enjoy this aspect of the hobby.
  • What is the scale and does it fit with other RC models I might own? — The 1/10 scale dimensions (425mm length) place it perfectly alongside most contemporary on-road touring cars from manufacturers including Traxxas, ARRMA, Losi and others. If you already own 1/10 scale cars, the Tamiya will integrate seamlessly into your collection. If you primarily own 1/8 scale buggies or larger vehicles, remember this operates at noticeably smaller proportions. The 1/10 scale selection reflects Tamiya's touring car focus, delivering genuine on-road handling benefits whilst remaining portable and accessible for UK backyard driving.
  • Does the Tamiya 58691 come ready to run, or do I need to assemble it? — This is an unassembled kit requiring complete assembly from components. This is not a ready-to-run (RTR) car, so you must invest time building it before maiden operation. However, the kit includes most mechanical components you need—principally missing are the radio system, servo, battery pack, charger and transmitter batteries. Tamiya offers no ready-built alternative for this specific model, so assembly is mandatory. Many intermediate builders view this positively as it allows genuine understanding of every component and considerably reduces setup cost compared to fully assembled RTR alternatives.
  • How does the Ford Escort Custom compare to the earlier WRC Escort model (Item 58335) released in 2004? — The 58691 custom version celebrates the rally heritage whilst presenting a street-spec interpretation rather than pure racing focus. Both models share the TT-02 chassis foundation, so handling characteristics align closely. The 58691 emphasises custom road-going aesthetics with blister fenders and integrated wing, whereas the 58335 focused on authentic WRC competition liveries and specs. If you prefer classic rally authenticity choose the 58335, but for custom street-spec visual appeal the 58691 delivers greater uniqueness and personality. Both represent excellent choices within the TT-02 ecosystem—selection depends purely on your aesthetic preferences.
  • What maintenance does the Tamiya 58691 require during regular operation? — The TT-02 platform designed for straightforward maintenance benefits from its identical left and right suspension components, simple friction damper adjustment without requiring shock fluid refills, and easily accessible gearboxes. Regular care involves cleaning mud and grass from suspension components, occasional damper adjustment, checking wheel bearings for looseness, and inspecting the polycarbonate body for cracking. The brushed motor requires no special maintenance beyond occasional contact cleaning. The friction dampers need no oil changes unlike oil-filled shocks. This emphasis on simple maintenance explains the TT-02's popularity among recreational drivers who enjoy genuine performance without specialist technical knowledge or specialised workshop equipment.
