Overview
The Tamiya Audi Quattro A2 Rally TT-02 is a 1/10 scale RC car that honours one of rallying's most iconic machines with authentic period-correct detailing and impressive engineering. This assembly kit recreates the legendary Audi quattro Rallye A2, the pioneering 4WD rally car that debuted in 1983 and revolutionised motorsport with its technological innovations. Whether you're a dedicated rally enthusiast, a seasoned RC hobbyist, or discovering high-performance RC cars in the UK for the first time, this model delivers the perfect blend of historical accuracy, build satisfaction and on-road performance. The Tamiya TT-02 chassis platform has earned its reputation as one of the most adaptable and balanced shaft-driven 4WD designs available, making it an excellent choice for both experienced builders and those stepping up to more sophisticated RC models.
This is not a ready-to-run RC car—it is a comprehensive assembly kit that rewards careful construction with exceptional results. The polycarbonate body is moulded with crisp contours that capture the distinctive two-door form of the original A2, whilst separate parts for side mirrors, rear wing and light cases enhance dimensional realism and provide authentic rally character. Every detail has been considered, from the classic triple fog lamp clusters that define the A2's recognisable front end to the sticker sheets and masking guides included to help you achieve a showroom-quality finish. Once assembled, this RC touring car delivers a captivating presence both at the track and on the display shelf, backed by straightforward assembly and proven running reliability.
The TT-02 shaft-driven 4WD chassis is engineered for stability and balanced handling across varied conditions. Technical Performance
The Tamiya Audi Quattro A2 Rally TT-02 is engineered around the proven TT-02 shaft-driven 4WD platform, a chassis that has established itself as one of the most balanced and adaptable designs in modern RC touring car development. The longitudinal layout positions the battery pack on the left side and the included Torque Tuned Type 540 brushed motor on the right, creating a weight distribution that delivers excellent stability and neutral handling characteristics. The four-wheel double wishbone suspension, fitted with friction dampers at front and rear, absorbs bumps smoothly and maintains predictable geometric progression as driving inputs intensify, making the car equally capable in the hands of developing drivers and experienced enthusiasts. The shaft-driven 4WD system distributes power through front and rear 4-bevel resin differentials, ensuring smooth, even torque delivery to all four wheels without the complexity or maintenance demands of belt-driven alternatives. The default gear ratio of 8.27:1 provides a well-balanced blend of acceleration and top-end performance, whilst the availability of nine further ratios (ranging from 11.38:1 to 7.28:1, using separately sold pinions) allows you to tailor the power delivery to your specific track layout and driving style. With a wheelbase of 257mm, the TT-02 platform delivers stable, composed cornering characteristics across typical tarmac surfaces, whilst the inclusion of two ground clearance settings and two tread configurations means you can adjust the car's geometry to optimise performance on different track conditions and surfaces. The polycarbonate body is both lightweight and durable, protecting the mechanical components whilst maintaining a responsive feel through directional changes. This is an unassembled kit that requires careful construction; however, the modular design—featuring identical left and right suspension arms and uprights—simplifies assembly and maintenance, meaning you'll spend less time with a spanner in your hand and more time enjoying genuine driving pleasure. The inclusion of the electronic speed controller removes a significant purchase requirement, though you will need a 2-channel RC radio system, servo, 7.2–7.4 volt battery pack with compatible charger, and R6/AA/UM3 batteries for the transmitter to complete the model and get it running on-road.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Tamiya Audi Quattro A2 Rally TT-02 suitable for beginners? — Yes, this model is rated at Skill Level 2 on Tamiya's difficulty scale, making it suitable for builders with basic model-assembly experience. The TT-02 chassis is renowned for ease of assembly thanks to its symmetrical suspension components (identical left and right arms and uprights) and straightforward construction sequence. However, this is an unassembled kit requiring soldering skills for motor connections and careful attention during suspension setup; complete beginners may benefit from an experienced builder's guidance or access to online assembly tutorials before starting.
- What battery does the Tamiya Audi Quattro A2 require? — The model requires a 7.2–7.4 volt battery pack to power the included electronic speed controller and Torque Tuned motor. Standard options include 7.2V NiMH stick packs (typically 3000mAh capacity) or 7.4V 2S LiPo packs; both are widely available from UK RC retailers. You will also need four R6/AA/UM3 batteries to power the transmitter independently. Always use a compatible charger matched to your chosen battery chemistry and capacity to ensure safe, efficient charging.
- What makes the TT-02 chassis so adaptable? — The TT-02 offers remarkable tuning flexibility through two selectable wheelbases, two ground clearance settings, two tread configurations and ten possible gear ratios (default 8.27:1, with nine alternatives available using separately sold pinions ranging from 11.38:1 to 7.28:1). This means you can progressively optimise the car's handling balance, acceleration characteristics and top-end speed to match your specific track layout, surface conditions and driving preferences, encouraging genuine long-term engagement and skill development.
- How does the shaft-driven 4WD system compare to belt-driven alternatives? — Shaft-driven 4WD systems like the TT-02 offer several advantages: they are simpler to assemble and maintain (no complex belt tensioning or alignment), deliver more direct power transfer with minimal energy loss, and require less frequent servicing. The trade-off is that shaft-driven systems are typically slightly less adjustable in final-drive geometry compared to belt systems; however, for on-road rally-style driving on tarmac, the TT-02's shaft-driven design provides excellent stability and predictable handling without sacrificing reliability or durability.
- Can I upgrade the Audi Quattro A2 Rally TT-02 with aftermarket parts? — Absolutely. Tamiya offers an extensive range of optional TT-02 parts including alloy shocks with adjustable damping, ball-race upgrades for the suspension and driveline, alternative gears for fine-tuning performance, and various cosmetic upgrades. Many UK RC retailers stock these options alongside the model, and numerous aftermarket manufacturers produce compatible TT-02 upgrades. A ball-race kit is particularly popular as a first upgrade, reducing friction and improving handling response. Always ensure any aftermarket parts are explicitly marked as TT-02 compatible before purchase.
- What surface is this RC car designed for? — The Tamiya Audi Quattro A2 Rally TT-02 is optimised for on-road tarmac surfaces. The four-wheel double wishbone suspension, friction dampers and tread-patterned racing radial tyres are all engineered for smooth, grippy tarmac rather than grass, gravel or loose surfaces. The lower ground clearance (compared to off-road models) means this is a true on-road touring car, ideal for driving on paved club tracks, smooth car parks or prepared outdoor surfaces.
- Does this kit include everything needed to drive the car? — No. Whilst the kit includes the chassis, body, motor and speed controller, you must separately purchase a 2-channel RC radio system (transmitter and receiver), steering servo, 7.2–7.4V battery pack with charger, and transmitter batteries. You will also need paint and masking materials to finish the polycarbonate body to your desired standard. Many UK RC retailers offer starter bundles combining the model kit with these essential components at discounted pricing, making it easier to establish a complete, ready-to-run package.
- What is the scale and approximate size of the finished model? — This is a 1/10 scale model measuring 458mm in length, 187mm in width and 135mm in height (with the rear wing fitted). The wheelbase is 257mm. These proportions deliver a stable, manageable size suitable for club tracks, car parks and private driving areas, neither too small to handle easily nor so large as to require specialised storage or transportation facilities.
