Key Features
- Rear-Mounted Motor Configuration — The motor is positioned at the rear of the chassis to drive the rear wheels exclusively, delivering enhanced traction and weight distribution that maximises grip on loose or uneven surfaces. This rear-wheel drive layout is particularly effective for off-road performance, as it concentrates power delivery where it's needed most and provides superior pulling power through challenging terrain.
- Four-Wheel Double Wishbone Suspension — An independent suspension system on all four corners ensures each wheel maintains contact with the ground independently, providing exceptional stability and control across rocky paths, sandy trails, and other rough off-road conditions. This engineering approach absorbs impacts smoothly and allows the buggy to navigate obstacles without losing traction or balance.
- CVA Oil-Filled Shock Absorbers — The suspension is equipped with C.V.A. (Controlled Viscous Action) oil dampers front and rear, providing precision shock absorption and damping characteristics that keep the chassis level and responsive. These oil-filled units deliver superior ride quality compared to traditional springs, reducing bottoming-out and maintaining consistent performance across varied terrain.
- Monocoque-Type Lower Arms — The lower suspension arms feature a highly rigid monocoque construction that reliably absorbs severe impacts without flexing or breaking. This design ensures that the suspension geometry remains consistent under extreme loads, maintaining predictable handling and extended component lifespan even during intense off-road runs.
- Lightweight ABS Bathtub Chassis — The main frame is constructed from durable yet lightweight ABS resin in a bathtub configuration, providing excellent impact resistance whilst keeping overall weight to a minimum. This material choice reduces inertia, improves acceleration, and enhances manoeuvrability without compromising the structural rigidity needed for off-road punishment.
- Fully-Enclosed Gearbox with Differential Gears — The sealed gearbox protects internal components from dirt, debris, and pebbles that are inevitable during off-road driving. The integrated three-bevel differential gearing system enables smooth cornering by allowing the outer wheels to rotate faster than inner wheels during turns, improving turn-in response and reducing tyre scrub.
- High-Grip Spiked Tyres with Specialised Tread Patterns — The front tyres feature three ribs with pin spikes that enhance straight-line stability and directional control on loose surfaces. The rear tyres are wider (52mm versus 45mm) and feature both pin spikes and an X-shaped tread pattern running down the centre, providing exceptional grip and traction during acceleration and cornering through challenging terrain.
- Realistic Injection-Moulded Body with Detail Parts — The black injection-moulded body shell comes pre-coloured in black and includes metal-plated light covers and side mirror parts that add genuine scale realism. These detail parts elevate the visual appeal and demonstrate Tamiya's commitment to authenticity in design, making the finished model look like a genuine off-road racing machine.
- Included Driver Figure and Splash-Pattern Stickers — A driver torso figure is included and fits in the cockpit area, adding life and character to the model. Additionally, a comprehensive sticker sheet featuring a fiery splash-pattern livery allows you to personalise the buggy's appearance and create a truly unique finished model that reflects your style.
- Brushed Motor and Electronic Speed Controller Ready — A Type 540 brushed motor is included in the kit, providing reliable torque delivery and straightforward operation. The kit is designed to work with an external electronic speed controller (sold separately), allowing you to choose from a wide range of compatible ESCs to match your preferred power delivery and features.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya Blitzer Beetle TAM58502 is engineered with precision to deliver outstanding off-road performance. The rear-mounted Type 540 brushed motor provides consistent torque characteristics ideal for rough terrain, whilst the 1:10.00 gear ratio is optimised to balance top speed with climbing power. The ABS bathtub chassis measures 394mm in length, 295mm in width, and 182mm in height, creating a compact yet capable platform with a 260mm wheelbase that enables responsive handling without sacrificing stability. The front tread width of 248mm and rear tread of 242mm provide a wide, planted stance that resists rolling during aggressive cornering. The front tyres measure 45mm wide by 98mm in diameter, whilst the larger rear tyres are 52mm wide by 99mm in diameter—a staggered sizing that improves weight transfer and traction during acceleration. The four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension with front and rear CVA oil dampers, combined with the monocoque-type lower arms, creates a platform capable of handling severe off-road impacts without damage. The fully-enclosed gearbox with three-bevel differential ensures protection from the elements whilst delivering smooth, predictable handling. With proper setup and quality batteries, this electric RC off-road buggy will achieve respectable speeds whilst maintaining exceptional traction and control across loose, uneven, and challenging terrain. The brushed motor system offers straightforward operation and maintenance, making this an excellent choice for those building their first serious competition-grade RC buggy.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Tamiya Blitzer Beetle TAM58502 suitable for beginners to RC car building? — Yes, this kit is designated Skill Level 2, making it accessible to those with some basic RC assembly experience. Whilst it requires patience and attention to detail, the straightforward rear-wheel drive layout and conventional suspension design mean there are fewer complex systems to master compared to advanced race kits. Many builders find the assembly process educational and rewarding, and the uncomplicated brushed motor system keeps operation simple for new drivers.
- What battery type does the Tamiya Blitzer Beetle need, and how long does it run? — The kit accepts both NiMH and LiPo batteries, though the exact runtime and charge time depend on your choice of battery capacity and chemistry. Typically, a 7.2V NiMH pack rated 2000-3000mAh provides 20-45 minutes of run time depending on driving style, whilst equivalent 2S LiPo packs offer faster charging and consistent power delivery. You'll need to purchase your battery separately and select a compatible charger to complete the kit.
- How does the rear-wheel drive layout benefit off-road performance? — Rear-wheel drive concentrates engine power where grip is needed most during acceleration on loose terrain. The rear-mounted motor position also optimises weight distribution, preventing the heavy drivetrain from negatively affecting steering response. This layout excels on sandy, rocky, and uneven surfaces where traction is paramount, making the Blitzer Beetle particularly suited to genuine off-road conditions rather than smooth surfaces.
- What makes the CVA oil dampers superior to standard springs? — CVA oil-filled dampers provide progressive damping characteristics that absorb impacts smoothly across a range of speeds and impacts. Unlike basic springs, they prevent the chassis from bouncing excessively after hitting obstacles, keeping the suspension geometry consistent and maintaining predictable handling. This results in smoother rides across rough terrain and more confidence in high-speed runs over challenging ground.
- Can I upgrade components on the Blitzer Beetle after building it? — Absolutely. The Tamiya Blitzer Beetle platform is well-established with numerous aftermarket upgrades available, including bearings, suspension tuning parts, gearbox modifications, and alternative motor options. Tamiya publishes a comprehensive R/C Parts Matching List (available as PDF) that identifies compatible upgrade components, allowing you to progressively enhance performance and handling characteristics as your skills and budget allow.
- What is the difference between this 2011 re-issue and the original Blitzer Beetle? — This 2011 re-issue features improved materials, refined suspension geometry based on decades of real-world RC racing feedback, and enhanced detail parts including metal-plated light covers and mirrors. The core platform remains proven and reliable, but the modern tooling and component selections reflect current manufacturing standards and hobbyist expectations. It represents the best version of this classic design, combining heritage appeal with contemporary engineering.
- Is the Blitzer Beetle competitive in organised RC racing? — Whilst the Blitzer Beetle is a genuine off-road buggy capable of impressive performance, modern competition 1/10 buggies often feature brushless motors, more advanced suspension tuning, and refined aerodynamics. However, this kit is perfectly suitable for recreational racing and competitive hobby events, and many racers choose to upgrade components progressively rather than replace the entire chassis. The strong engineering foundation means it can hold its own with appropriate setup and driver skill.
