If you're looking for a quality ready-to-assemble RC buggy in the UK with excellent handling characteristics and genuine Tamiya quality, this is a model that truly delivers.

This is a comprehensive unassembled kit designed for builders who enjoy the satisfaction of constructing their own RC model from the ground up. The Super Hotshot 2012 represents outstanding value for hobbyists seeking a versatile off-road RC buggy that combines classic styling with modern componentry. The model features genuine Tamiya engineering throughout, including precision-engineered chassis components, quality suspension systems and factory-fitted motor and electronic speed controller. For anyone serious about RC cars and wanting an authentic classic buggy experience, this kit offers exactly what you need.

The 39 cm frame length makes this a substantial and impressive model that commands attention on any RC track or off-road course. Built around a proven shaft-driven four-wheel-drive architecture, the Super Hotshot 2012 is engineered to provide reliable performance across various terrain types and driving conditions. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor, a weekend basher enjoying informal off-road play, or simply passionate about classic RC vehicles, this Tamiya buggy is an excellent choice that delivers genuine performance and lasting value.

Key Features

  • Shaft-Driven 4WD Drivetrain — This authentic shaft-driven four-wheel-drive system is the heart of the Super Hotshot 2012, directly inherited from the original 1986 design and proven through decades of reliable performance. Shaft drive provides excellent power delivery and durability compared to belt systems, making this ideal for serious off-road bashers and racers who demand mechanical reliability.
  • 4-Wheel Double Wishbone Suspension — The sophisticated double wishbone suspension geometry at all four corners provides excellent terrain compliance and predictable handling characteristics across rough, uneven ground. This professional-grade suspension design is far superior to simpler suspension systems, giving you confidence in technical sections and challenging terrain.
  • 4 Oil-Filled Dampers — Each suspension corner is equipped with oil-filled shock absorbers that provide controlled, consistent damping and prevent harsh impacts from transferring directly to the chassis. This results in smoother acceleration, better traction and improved overall ride quality that makes the model more enjoyable to drive in varied conditions.
  • Chassis Under Guard Protection — A protective underbody guard shields the critical drivetrain and chassis components from impact damage, mud, rocks and debris encountered during aggressive off-road driving. This practical feature significantly extends the lifespan of your model by preventing costly damage during routine bashful play.
  • Included Spiked Tyres on Gold-Plated Wheels — The model comes complete with aggressive spiked off-road tyres mounted on attractive gold-plated wheels that provide excellent grip and traction on loose surfaces. The premium finish of the wheels adds visual appeal while the spiked tyre compound is specifically formulated for off-road performance.
  • Polycarbonate Body with Rear Wing — A lightweight polycarbonate bodyshell and functional rear wing are included, requiring finishing with suitable polycarbonate paint to complete the aesthetic. Polycarbonate construction offers durability and allows for customisation through paint schemes and decals.
  • Full Ball Bearing Specification — Precision ball bearings are fitted throughout the chassis at all rotating points, minimising friction and mechanical drag. This ensures responsive handling, better acceleration and maximum runtime from your battery charge, while also reducing wear and extending component lifespan.
  • Tamiya GT-Tuned Motor (25T) — The included Tamiya GT-Tuned brushed electric motor is specifically calibrated for off-road performance and provides an excellent balance of speed and torque suitable for challenging terrain. The 25-tooth pinion configuration provides optimal gearing for buggy driving.
  • Integrated Electronic Speed Controller — The included Tamiya ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) manages power delivery to the motor with precision, providing smooth acceleration control and integrated braking functionality. This allows you to focus purely on driving rather than managing complex electronics.
  • 1/10 Scale Assembly Kit Format — This unassembled kit provides an engaging building experience for enthusiasts who enjoy the satisfaction of constructing their own RC model. Skill Level 2 indicates moderate assembly complexity with clear instructions suitable for builders with some prior RC experience.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Super Hotshot 2012 delivers impressive engineering and performance characteristics that justify its legendary status in the RC buggy world. The shaft-driven 4WD system is a defining characteristic that sets this model apart from contemporary designs, providing robust power delivery and mechanical durability that appeal to serious enthusiasts. The chassis is manufactured to Tamiya's exacting standards using premium materials including precision-engineered metal and composite components throughout. The 4-wheel double wishbone suspension with oil-filled dampers at each corner provides sophisticated terrain management and excellent control responses during aggressive driving. All rotating points feature full ball bearing specification, which minimises friction losses and maximises performance from the included Tamiya GT-Tuned 25T brushed motor. This proven electric drivetrain configuration delivers responsive acceleration and adequate power for serious off-road adventures across varied terrain types. The inclusion of an integrated ESC means you have everything required to operate the model once assembly is complete, subject only to acquiring a suitable radio control system, battery pack and charger. The spiked off-road tyres provide exceptional traction on loose surfaces including sand, dirt and grass, whilst the lightweight polycarbonate body keeps overall mass to a minimum for improved acceleration and manoeuvrability. The protective chassis under guard ensures that critical drivetrain components remain protected during intense off-road sessions where contact with rocks, roots and rough terrain is inevitable. Whether you're seeking a classic RC buggy with proven performance credentials or an authentic vintage RC experience, the Super Hotshot 2012 delivers engineering excellence throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya Super Hotshot 2012 suitable for beginners? — This model is rated Skill Level 2, indicating moderate assembly complexity that suits builders with some prior RC experience rather than complete newcomers. The unassembled kit format means you'll need to invest time in construction, and you'll require additional components beyond the kit itself to get the model running. However, once assembled and operational, the Super Hotshot 2012 is straightforward to drive and offers predictable handling that's forgiving for developing drivers. If you're new to RC altogether, consider seeking guidance from experienced enthusiasts or purchasing from a retailer who can provide assembly support.
  • What battery does the Tamiya Super Hotshot 2012 need? — The included Tamiya ESC is compatible with 7.2V NiMh battery packs, which are the standard power source for this class of model. You can also use compatible 2S LiPo batteries if your charger supports LiPo charging protocols. Always verify compatibility between your chosen battery pack, charger and the included ESC before purchasing. Quality battery packs from reputable manufacturers are strongly recommended to ensure safe operation and maximum runtime.
  • How does the shaft-driven system compare to belt-driven buggies? — Shaft-driven transmission systems offer superior durability and lower maintenance requirements compared to belt-driven designs, as there are no belts to wear out, slip or require tensioning adjustment. The shaft system provides more direct power delivery with less parasitic losses, translating to improved responsiveness and better efficiency. For serious off-road bashers who value reliability and reduced maintenance, the shaft-driven architecture of the Super Hotshot 2012 is genuinely superior to contemporary belt-driven alternatives.
  • What is the approximate size of the Super Hotshot 2012? — With a frame length of 39 centimetres, the Super Hotshot 2012 is a substantial 1/10 scale off-road buggy that commands presence on any track or driving course. This scale and size make it ideal for serious RC enthusiasts seeking a model that's large enough for stable handling yet compact enough to transport and store without excessive difficulty. The proportions are perfect for outdoor off-road play and competitive racing formats.
  • Does this kit include everything needed to run the model? — The kit includes the chassis, motor, ESC, suspension, wheels, tyres, body and rear wing, but you must source a radio control system, battery pack, charger and steering servo separately. This modular approach allows you to select radio and battery components that match your preferences and budget, though it does mean the kit isn't truly ready to run straight from the box. Budget accordingly for these additional components when planning your purchase.
  • What makes the classic Tamiya buggy design still relevant today? — The original 1986 Super Shot design was engineered so effectively that Tamiya has re-released it essentially unchanged as the Super Hotshot 2012, testament to the timeless quality of the original engineering. The shaft-driven 4WD system, double wishbone suspension and chassis architecture remain highly competitive with modern designs, offering predictable handling, durability and performance that appeal to purists who value proven engineering over passing trends.

Why choose Tamiya Super Hot Shot 2012 TAM58517?

Retro styling only goes so far without performance to back it up. The Tamiya Super Hot Shot 2012 blends nostalgic aesthetics with advanced engineering, making it one of the most affordable ways to own a true classic. The low-profile design, paired with adjustable ride height via the oil-damped suspension, gives new and seasoned drivers confidence on loose dirt, schoolyard gravel or home-grown backyard tracks. For anyone seeking the best blend of heritage and modern capability, no other kit captures the era quite like TAM58517.

What sets the Tamiya TAM58517 4WD buggy apart?

Many replicas skim on authenticity or neglect crucial upgrades. The Tamiya TAM58517 4WD buggy preserves the original’s silhouette, while the upgraded underguard and reinforced chassis deliver exceptional torsional rigidity. Full ball bearings minimise drag, and the precisely machined bevel differentials keep each wheel rotating at the optimal speed through tight turns. Whether you’re sliding around a twisty backyard circuit or dicing with friends at club level, the TAM58517 4WD buggy consistently outperforms rivals in its class.

Modern enhancements in the Tamiya oil-damped suspension kit

The signature yellow oil dampers combine a durable piston design with three selectable spring tensions, enabling micro-adjustments to compression and rebound. In practice, this means the Tamiya oil-damped suspension kit can be tuned for blistering high-speed runs or dialled-back compliance when traction is at a premium. The double wishbone geometry ensures each tyre maintains maximum contact patch, translating to predictable handling on both hard pack and looser surfaces.

How does the Tamiya Super Hot Shot RC kit deliver performance?

Power travels from the Tamiya GT-Tuned 25T motor buggy through durable dog-bone driveshafts into front and rear bevel differentials, each optimised for minimal backlash. The robust ESC interface (sold separately) allows for fine-tuned throttle curves, while full ball bearings throughout the chassis reduce mechanical resistance. Assembly of the Tamiya Super Hot Shot RC kit teaches valuable maintenance skills, letting hobbyists perfect gear mesh and drivetrain alignment for peak efficiency.

Power and precision from the GT-Tuned 25T motor buggy

No vintage reissue feels truly modern without ample torque at the flick of the throttle. The GT-Tuned 25T motor provides instant response, keeping the spiked tyres glued to the ground even under heavy acceleration. This balanced setup, combined with the shaft-driven 4WD layout, allows the buggy to power through off-camber bumps and maintain speed in sweeps. From casual weekend drives to competitive club racing, the Tamiya Super Hot Shot 2012 delivers consistent, controllable power where it matters most.

The Tamiya Super Hot Shot 2012 has everything you need to relive the golden age of R/C buggies with updated reliability and tuning flexibility. buy Tamiya Super Hot Shot 2012 kit today.
