Product Overview

Meet the COPPERHEAD 10 PERFORMANCE ESC. It takes to the open road as well as it takes to no road at all. This completely new design rounds out our 1:10 scale offerings, positioned between the SIDEWINDER 4 as the entry-level upgrade and the MAMBA X as the extreme performance option. The COPPERHEAD 10 includes CRYO-DRIVE TECHNOLOGY, SENSORED MOTOR SUPPORT and DATA LOGGING LITE* with Castle's signature reliability and performance.

Throughout its development the Copperhead has been put to the test in all types of elements and performed as aggressively, or as stealthy, as desired. Whether on the trail dominating the gates or throwing dust on the dirt track, the Copperhead is power hungry when you need it and oozes smooth low-end power for technical low RPM performance. If your rig is outfitted with high-power servos (or additional torque increasing modifications) there is no need to worry about brown-outs, glitching or slow actuating servos. The Copperhead provides clean and constant power with its user selectable (through Castle Link) 5.5V or 7.5V (6A peak) internal BEC.

The ESC can be installed and calibrated (plug and play) and provide immediate fuss-free wheel time. Through the interface-free manual programming mode, using your transmitter you can set your low-voltage cutoff, brake/reverse type, brake amount, drag brake, motor type and direction. Likewise, you can employ the use of the Castle Link Programming Suite on your WindowsT PC, or wirelessly with the convenience of the new B-LinkT BluetoothT Adapter and Castle Link app for Android or iOS. Additional Castle Link benefits include access to all firmware updates and added features sets released from Castle Engineering (at no charge), the ability to download and analyze your collected Data Log , an Intuitive Demo Mode capability as well as the option to save setup profiles (for multiple vehicles) for later use.

For crawler setups or others that do not require an ESC cooling fan, the fan is easily removed with four screws and the fan guard with the cool COPPERHEAD logo simply clicks back into place on the top of the ESC. It keeps the COPPERHEAD 10 looking mean and provides an extra measure of protection. To further protect your investment, the COPPERHEAD emits audible alerts for easy diagnosis of common issues such as motor-over-temperature and low-voltage cutoff. You'll find a handy decal in your box that contains a reference chart for the eight alert tones, no need to Google while your enjoying your wheel time!

We've packaged the COPPERHEAD 10 with a dozen different 4-POLE 12-SLOT sensored motor options to eliminate the guesswork in finding the right brushless power upgrade for your basher, crawler, on road vehicle, short course or monster truck. An added bonus of pairing your Copperhead with a Castle 4-Pole 12-Slot sensored motor is enabling SMARTSENSET TECHNOLOGY, which uses the motor's sensors at startup to provide cog-free starts, excellent torque and low-speed drivability. Once the motor is turning, the ESC seamlessly transitions to Castle's ultra-efficient sensorless mode with electronic timing to advance timing automatically for peak performance in all driving conditions.

The all-new COPPERHEAD 10 PERFORMANCE 1:10 SCALE ESC is ideal for those who want sensored motor support, data logging, a 6A peak selectable internal BEC (5.5V or 7.5V) and Castle's signature reliability and performance in the meanest looking ESC around! If you're looking to transform your 1:10 scale stock vehicle from dull to dangerously fun COPPERHEAD can do it with its buttery smooth starts, CRYO-DRIVE enabled performance and up to 4S power in a compact, easy-to-install footprint.

Extended Features

Castle's newest software technology, CRYO-DRIVE minimises the amount of time the ESC's electrical components spend generating heat by optimally controlling which components are being used while driving the motor. This is happening thousands of times per second, which greatly reduces the rate at which the ESC heats up. This results in significantly improved thermal performance during partial throttle operation where the majority of driving occurs. Your setup will be able to handle higher gear ratios, in heavier vehicles, with longer runs.

When paired with a Castle 4-POLE 12-SLOT SENSORED MOTOR SmartSense software, enabled by default in the Castle Link Programming Suite, will use the motor's sensors to provide smooth starts, excellent torque, and low-speed drivability. Smooth sensored startups and high-efficiency sensorless running makes the COPPERHEAD 10 system produce more power and less heat. QUIETSENSE is an innovative advancement in the design of sensored motors to deliver the highest precision and most efficient startup.

Battery Voltage, Battery Ripple, Controller Temperature, Motor RPM and Motor Temperature data points can be captured, downloaded and analyzed via Castle Link software. While not a full version of Data Logging capabilities that the MAMBA X EXTREME 1:10 SCALE ESC has, these critical parameters are excellent sources of information for maximizing performance and battery life of the COPPERHEAD 10.

Key Features

  • SMARTSENSE Sensored Startup Technology — When paired with the included Castle 4-pole, 12-slot sensored motor, SMARTSENSE uses the motor's internal sensors to provide cog-free starts, excellent torque and superior low-speed drivability at the moment of throttle application. Once the motor begins turning, the ESC seamlessly transitions to Castle's ultra-efficient sensorless mode with automatic electronic timing advance for peak performance across all driving conditions.
  • CRYO-DRIVE Thermal Efficiency Technology — This innovative software-based thermal management system minimises the amount of time the ESC's electrical components spend generating heat by intelligently controlling which components are active during motor operation. This process occurs thousands of times per second, dramatically reducing the rate at which the ESC heats up. The result is significantly improved thermal performance during partial throttle operation (where the majority of real-world driving occurs), allowing your setup to handle higher gear ratios, heavier vehicles and longer running sessions without thermal stress.
  • Dual-Voltage Selectable BEC with 6A Peak Output — The integrated battery eliminator circuit can be programmed via Castle Link to output either 5.5V or 7.5V at up to 6A peak current, providing clean and constant power to your servo(s) and receiver. This eliminates the need for a separate BEC battery, simplifies your wiring harness and prevents common issues like brown-out glitches that occur when servo current draw exceeds the receiver's power capacity. The selectable voltage output allows you to optimise servo performance for your specific setup.
  • Sensored Motor Support with Multiple Running Modes — The COPPERHEAD 10 supports three distinct running modes: SMARTSENSE (sensored startup with sensorless running), Sensored Only (continuous sensored operation) and Brushed mode for compatibility with older brushed motors. This versatility means you can optimise the system for your specific application and driving style, or upgrade to sensored operation in future without replacing the ESC.
  • Data Logging Lite Performance Monitoring — Unlike basic ESCs, the COPPERHEAD 10 continuously captures and records critical performance data including battery voltage, battery ripple current, controller temperature, motor RPM and motor temperature. This data can be downloaded and analysed via the Castle Link Programming Suite to help you optimise your setup, identify thermal issues before they cause failure and extend battery life through informed gearing and driving decisions.
  • Waterproof Epoxy Potted Construction — The ESC is housed in a durable injection-moulded plastic case and fully potted in waterproof epoxy, providing excellent protection against moisture, dirt and physical damage whilst promoting efficient heat transfer away from the sensitive electronics. This proven construction method has been used by Castle for years and provides genuine waterproof protection without compromising thermal performance.
  • 30mm Removable Cooling Fan with Dual-Use Guard — The integrated 30mm cooling fan aggressively removes heat from the ESC during high-demand operation. For applications that don't require the fan (such as crawler setups with lower power draws), it can be easily removed by unscrewing four fasteners. The included dual-use fan guard features the COPPERHEAD logo and clicks back into place to provide both aesthetic appeal and physical protection for the ESC's internals.
  • Castle Link Programming Suite for Advanced Tuning — Access a comprehensive suite of tuning parameters via Castle's renowned programming software on Windows PC (USB adapter coupon included in box), or wirelessly via the optional B-Link Bluetooth Adapter and Castle Link app on Android/iOS devices. Save multiple setup profiles for different vehicles, access all firmware updates released by Castle Engineering at no charge, and employ an intuitive demo mode for learning the system.
  • Manual Transmitter Programming for Quick Setup — For immediate use without a PC, the COPPERHEAD 10 supports interface-free programming directly from your RC transmitter. Configure low-voltage cutoff thresholds, brake and reverse type, brake amount, drag brake level, motor type selection and motor direction rotation — all from your transmitter controls with audible confirmation.
  • Audible Alert Diagnosis System — Eight distinct audible alert tones notify you of important system conditions including motor over-temperature, low-voltage cutoff, calibration issues and error conditions. A convenient reference chart is included in the box so you can instantly diagnose problems without needing to search online.
  • S.BUS2 Telemetry Ready for Futaba Transmitters — For owners of Futaba T4PX, T7PX or T7PXR transmitters, the COPPERHEAD 10 is compatible with the optional Castle Creations Telemetry Link for S.BUS2, allowing real-time monitoring of ESC temperature, battery voltage, current draw and motor RPM directly on your transmitter screen. This provides another layer of performance protection and eliminates uncertainty about system parameters during operation.
  • 3.2mm Motor Shaft Size — The included 1406-5700KV sensored motor features a standard 3.2mm (1/8 inch) shaft, which is the most common size for 1/10 scale vehicles and crawler applications. This shaft size balances strength with light weight, with a wide range of compatible pinion gears readily available. The 3.2mm size is appropriate for most 1/10 scale bashers, buggies, short-course trucks and light crawler builds.
  • Motor Temperature Cutoff Protection — When used with the included sensored motor and programmed via Castle Link, the system can automatically cut throttle if the motor reaches a user-selectable temperature threshold (adjustable from 120°F to 210°F). This safeguard prevents thermal damage to motor windings and magnets during extended or intense running sessions, automatically protecting your investment.

Technical Performance

The COPPERHEAD 10 1406-5700KV COMBO delivers impressive performance across a wide range of 1/10 scale RC vehicles and driving styles. The system accepts input voltage from 2S to 4S LiPo battery packs (the ESC itself is rated for 2S–4S LiPo), making it suitable for applications from lightweight 2WD buggies and stadium trucks running on 2S through to heavier basher and crawler setups on 3S or 4S power. The included Castle 1406-5700KV sensored brushless motor provides 5700 RPM per volt of input, offering an excellent balance between raw speed and usable torque for the target vehicle weight range of up to approximately 2.3kg (5 lbs) ready-to-run. The 4-pole, 12-slot motor construction delivers smooth power delivery with minimal cogging for responsive throttle control and excellent low-speed manageability — critical for technical driving, trail negotiation and rock crawling applications.

The CRYO-DRIVE thermal technology ensures that the ESC remains cool even during extended full-throttle driving or aggressive partial-throttle usage. This advanced thermal management allows you to use higher gear ratios (which would normally generate excessive heat) and extend running time on a single battery charge. The waterproof epoxy potting and sealed construction mean the ESC can handle splashing, brief submersion and muddy conditions, though Castle recommends applying dielectric grease to the sensor connector and rinsing with clean water after wet conditions, then allowing proper drying time before storage to prevent rust on internal steel components. The 30mm cooling fan operates automatically under load and removes excess heat, whilst the compact form factor allows installation in tight engine bays typical of modern 1/10 scale designs.

Build quality throughout the COPPERHEAD 10 reflects Castle Creations' twenty years of industry-leading expertise. The injection-moulded plastic case provides excellent durability for rock crawling, bashing and off-road use whilst remaining lightweight. All internal components are potted in waterproof epoxy for protection. The high-strand-count silicone-coated copper wire used throughout the ESC and motor features lower resistance than solid copper, meaning more power reaches your motor with less wasted as heat — a critical advantage when every fraction of efficiency counts toward performance and battery life.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the COPPERHEAD 10 with 1406-5700KV motor suitable for a beginner RC enthusiast? — Yes, the COPPERHEAD 10 is an excellent choice for users progressing beyond entry-level systems. The included SMARTSENSE sensored startup technology provides smooth, forgiving acceleration ideal for learning proper throttle control, whilst the data logging and transmitter programming features are intuitive enough for beginners yet sophisticated enough for advanced users to tune performance. The audible alerts help diagnose setup issues without needing technical expertise, and the included quick-start guide provides clear basic setup instructions.
  • What battery does the COPPERHEAD 10 require, and how long does it run? — The system accepts any quality 2S, 3S or 4S LiPo battery pack, though Castle recommends minimum battery capacity specifications based on your specific vehicle type and weight (found on their website). For typical 1/10 scale bashers and crawlers in the 2–2.3kg weight range, a 2S or 3S LiPo with 5000–7000mAh capacity is recommended. Runtime depends on driving style, gear ratio, battery capacity and vehicle weight, but generally ranges from 15 to 30 minutes per battery pack on 3S. Always check the official Castle recommendations for your specific application to ensure adequate power delivery and safe thermal operation.
  • Can I run the COPPERHEAD 10 sensored motor on a non-sensored ESC if I upgrade later? — Yes. The sensored motor included in this combo will operate perfectly on any non-sensored ESC by simply connecting the three main drive wires and setting aside the sensor cable. You'll lose the SMARTSENSE sensored startup benefits but retain the same performance as a non-sensored motor. There is no disadvantage to running a sensored motor on a non-sensored ESC, and you maintain the option to utilise sensored operation whenever you upgrade your ESC in future.
  • How does the COPPERHEAD 10 compare to other 1/10 scale brushless combos available in the UK? — The COPPERHEAD 10 is positioned between Castle's entry-level SIDEWINDER 4 (suitable for basic upgrading) and the extreme MAMBA X (for competition-grade performance). Compared to competitors' offerings, the COPPERHEAD 10 stands out for its CRYO-DRIVE thermal technology (reducing heat and allowing extended runtime), included sensored motor with SMARTSENSE startup (providing smooth, controllable acceleration), Data Logging Lite capabilities (for performance analysis and optimisation), and the comprehensive Castle Link programming suite (offering twenty years of proven software development). The combo approach eliminates compatibility guesswork and provides matched components optimised to work together.
  • Is this combo waterproof? — The COPPERHEAD 10 ESC features waterproof epoxy potting providing excellent water resistance for splashing and brief submersion typical of RC car use. The sensored motor is water-resistant with a double silicone conformal coating on the sensor circuit board. However, Castle recommends applying dielectric grease to the outside of the sensor port whilst the sensor wire is installed to prevent water ingress. After wet running, rinse the motor with clean water (to remove salt, dirt or abrasive particles), dry thoroughly, and apply dielectric grease to all connector contacts to prevent rust during storage. Avoid submerging either component for extended periods.
  • Can I reprogram the motor direction if I install it differently in my vehicle? — Absolutely. The COPPERHEAD 10 features a Motor Direction setting accessible through both transmitter programming (for quick reversal) and Castle Link (for more detailed configuration). This allows you to reverse the direction of motor shaft rotation without physically removing or rewiring the motor, providing complete flexibility in vehicle layout and integration.
  • What makes CRYO-DRIVE technology important for my RC car? — CRYO-DRIVE minimises thermal stress on the ESC by intelligently controlling which components are active during each microsecond of motor operation. This thousands-per-second optimisation significantly reduces heat generation especially during partial throttle operation (where you spend the majority of driving time), allowing you to run higher gear ratios without thermal overload, extend battery runtime through more efficient power delivery, and achieve longer ESC lifespan through reduced heat exposure to components. In practical terms, this means better performance, longer running times and improved reliability compared to basic ESCs without thermal management.
  • Do I need to buy a separate BEC battery for my servo? — No. The COPPERHEAD 10 includes an integrated battery eliminator circuit (BEC) with selectable 5.5V or 7.5V output at up to 6A peak current. This powers your steering servo and receiver directly from the main battery pack, eliminating the need to purchase and carry a separate BEC battery. This simplifies your wiring, reduces vehicle weight and eliminates the risk of brown-out glitches caused by inadequate servo power supply.
  • What is the difference between SMARTSENSE and running the motor in Sensored Only mode? — SMARTSENSE (default setting) uses the motor's internal sensors only during initial startup to provide smooth, cog-free acceleration and excellent low-RPM torque. Once the motor reaches operating speed, it seamlessly transitions to sensorless mode with automatic electronic timing advance for peak efficiency and performance at higher speeds. Sensored Only mode keeps the sensors engaged continuously throughout operation, providing maximum low-speed control but consuming slightly more power. Most users find SMARTSENSE provides the best balance of startup smoothness and high-speed efficiency.
  • Is a cooling fan essential, or can I remove it? — The 30mm cooling fan helps manage heat during extended full-throttle runs and high-load conditions. For applications like rock crawling where power demands are moderate and you're using lower gear ratios, the fan can be easily removed by unscrewing four fasteners. The included dual-use fan guard will click into place to keep the same aesthetic appearance. However, Castle recommends keeping the fan installed if you plan extended running sessions, higher voltage batteries (4S), or aggressive driving styles — the thermal protection it provides is valuable insurance against ESC failure.
  • Can I use the Castle Link Programming Suite on my mobile phone? — The full Castle Link Programming Suite requires a Windows PC, but Castle now offers wireless mobile programming through the Castle Link app (available on Google Play for Android and Apple App Store for iOS devices) when paired with the separately available B-Link Bluetooth Adapter. This compact Bluetooth adapter installs in your vehicle alongside the ESC, allowing you to adjust settings and download data logs from your phone anywhere without needing a PC, providing convenient on-the-field tuning capability.
