Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between this motor and other EZRUN models like the 5687 or 56113? — The EZRUN 4985 1650KV is specifically engineered for 1/6th and 1/7th scale vehicles, whilst the 5687 1100KV and 56113 800KV are designed for larger 1/5th scale applications. The 4985's 1650KV rating makes it significantly faster than the lower-KV alternatives, delivering higher RPM and faster acceleration. The 4985 is more compact and lighter weight than the larger motors, making it ideal for smaller, more agile 1/6th scale platforms. Choose the 4985 if you're running a 1/6th or 1/7th scale RC car; choose the larger motors only if you're building or upgrading a 1/5th scale vehicle.
  • Is this brushless RC motor suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst the EZRUN 4985 is a high-performance motor, it is straightforward to install and operate. The sensorless design means fewer components to worry about, and the brushless technology requires no maintenance like brushed motors do. If you're new to RC and building or upgrading a 1/6th or 1/7th scale car, this is an excellent choice that will give you years of reliable performance without requiring constant tuning or brush replacements.
  • What battery does this motor need, and what are the differences between 3S and 6S configurations? — This motor accepts 3S, 4S, 5S, or 6S LiPo batteries. A 3S battery (11.1V nominal) provides moderate power and longer runtime, making it suitable for casual bashing and learning. A 6S battery (22.2V nominal) delivers maximum performance with rapid acceleration and higher top speed, but uses battery capacity faster and generates more heat. Most competitive 1/6th scale racers run either 4S or 6S depending on track conditions and driving style. Start with 3S or 4S if you're new to the hobby, then experiment with higher voltages as you gain experience.
  • Is the EZRUN 4985 motor waterproof? — The motor itself is not fully waterproof, though the hard anodised aluminium case provides excellent protection against moisture. If you plan to run in wet conditions or splash through water, ensure your ESC and battery are waterproofed, and rinse the motor with fresh water after muddy or wet use. Allow the motor to dry completely before storing.
  • Can I use this motor with a different ESC, or do I have to use the EZRUN MAX6? — Whilst the EZRUN 4985 is optimised for the EZRUN MAX6 ESC, it is a standard brushless motor and can work with any quality brushless ESC rated for 3-6S LiPo batteries and appropriate current handling. However, Hobbywing's engineering team has specifically tuned the MAX6 ESC to work perfectly with this motor, so using that combination will give you the smoothest power delivery and best performance.
  • What makes this motor 90% efficient, and why does that matter? — The 90% efficiency rating means that 90% of the electrical energy from your battery is converted to mechanical power spinning the rotor, with only 10% lost as heat. This is achieved through precision manufacturing, high-quality materials (ultra-thin silicon steel laminations, oxygen-free windings), and optimised magnetic circuit design. High efficiency matters because it means less heat generation (so the motor runs cooler and lasts longer), longer runtime from each battery charge, better throttle response, and less strain on your ESC and battery. It's one of the key reasons this motor is considered industry-leading.
  • How many watts of power does this motor produce? — The power output depends on your battery voltage. On a 3S LiPo battery (11.1V), this motor produces approximately 1,830 watts at full throttle. On a 6S LiPo (22.2V), it produces approximately 3,660 watts. These are theoretical maximums and actual output will vary slightly depending on load, rotor speed, and other factors.
  • What is sensorless operation, and is it better than sensored motors? — Sensorless brushless motors detect rotor position indirectly by monitoring back-EMF (electrical feedback from the spinning rotor) rather than using physical sensor components. For 1/6th scale RC cars, sensorless operation is perfectly fine and offers advantages including simpler construction, lower cost, and fewer potential failure points. Sensored motors are primarily used in larger scale vehicles or where ultra-smooth low-speed crawling is required. For 1/6th scale racing and bashing, the EZRUN 4985 sensorless design is ideal.
  • How do I reverse the motor direction if it spins the wrong way? — Simply swap any two of the three motor wires (A, B, or C) where they connect to your ESC. For example, if you swap wires A and B, the motor will spin in the opposite direction. This is one of the advantages of brushless motors—reversing direction is quick and easy with no special tools or adjustments required.
  • Is this motor suitable for rock crawling or low-speed off-road driving? — Whilst this motor is capable of smooth low-speed control, its 1650KV rating makes it optimised for higher-speed applications like racing and bashing rather than technical crawling. For rock crawling, you'd typically choose a lower-KV motor (like the 1250KV variant) that provides more torque and lower RPM. That said, paired with appropriate gearing and a quality ESC with programmable throttle curves, the 1650KV will still perform well in mixed-terrain driving.
