Overview

The FTX Outback Fury/Hi-Rock Alloy Portal Axle Conversion Set (FTX9217) is a precision-engineered upgrade designed to dramatically enhance the off-road capability, scale realism, and drivetrain durability of your 1/10 trail crawler. Built specifically for the FTX Outback Fury and FTX Hi-Rock platforms, this conversion kit introduces portal axle geometry that raises the axle housing above the wheel centre—delivering increased ground clearance without altering tyre size. If you're serious about taking your RC car UK experience to the next level, this is the upgrade that separates casual bashers from dedicated crawling enthusiasts. Whether you're tackling rocky terrain, steep ascents, or technical obstacles, the portal axle conversion transforms how your crawler performs and looks.

Portal axle systems are the hallmark of genuine scale crawlers, and this FTX conversion brings authentic 4x4 geometry to your Fury or Hi-Rock platform. The result is improved obstacle traversal, better torque distribution, and enhanced low-speed control—critical for technical crawling and steep ascents. This is not just a visual upgrade; it fundamentally changes how your crawler interacts with terrain. Ready to run RC enthusiasts will appreciate that this kit includes everything needed to transform their setup into a serious trail-ready machine, while experienced builders will recognise the quality of CNC-machined components and hardened drivetrain elements throughout.

With CNC-machined alloy housings, hardened steel gears, and full ball-bearing support, the FTX9217 alloy portal axle kit is built to withstand rugged terrain whilst elevating the visual and mechanical sophistication of your crawler. This conversion can also be mounted on the Element Enduro platform if the steering bar is mounted at the front, offering additional versatility for multi-platform enthusiasts.

Key Features

  • Portal Axle Geometry — The defining feature of this conversion increases ground clearance and improves crawl performance by lifting the axle housing above the wheel centre, allowing your crawler to tackle rocks, roots, and uneven terrain with greater ease without requiring larger tyres. Portal drives also alter the final gear ratio at each wheel, enhancing torque output and low-speed control—critical for technical crawling and steep ascents.
  • Alloy Axle Housings (Front & Rear) — CNC-machined from quality aluminium alloy for structural rigidity, scale realism, and long-term durability. These housings are engineered to withstand the stresses of serious trail work whilst maintaining the authentic appearance of a full-scale 4x4 crawler.
  • Painted Alloy Axle Covers — These cover the differential assemblies with attractive painted finish, adding visual detail and corrosion resistance to protect internal components from dirt and moisture during extended outdoor use.
  • Hardened Steel Drive Gears — Built from hardened steel throughout the drivetrain, these gears deliver exceptional durability and torque handling capabilities. The hardened material resists wear and stripping, ensuring reliable performance session after session on demanding terrain.
  • CNC Portal Housing — Precision-machined portal housings create the characteristic portal axle geometry that increases ground clearance and modifies the gear ratio per wheel, directly improving your crawler's ability to traverse obstacles and maintain control on steep terrain.
  • CNC Steering Block and C-Hubs — Precision CNC-machined steering components ensure responsive control and reliable articulation. These components are critical for steering accuracy and suspension geometry, allowing your crawler to maintain traction and control through technical sections.
  • Front CVA Driveshafts — Constant velocity articulated driveshafts improve steering articulation and reduce wear on drivetrain components. This design allows the front wheels to articulate freely whilst maintaining power delivery, essential for serious rock crawling.
  • CNC Steering Bar — A precision-machined steering bar that works in conjunction with the portal axle geometry to provide stable, responsive steering control. This component is essential for maintaining steering geometry throughout the conversion.
  • Panhard Bar — The included Panhard bar stabilises axle movement and enhances steering geometry, reducing unwanted sideways chassis movement and keeping your crawler planted on uneven terrain. Note: Some users report that the sprung Panhard bar design may require a high-torque servo (30kg minimum recommended) for optimal steering response.
  • Ball-Bearing Supported Shafts — All shafts throughout the assembly are supported by ball bearings, reducing friction and improving drivetrain efficiency. This design choice minimises drag, improves responsiveness, and extends the lifespan of drivetrain components through reduced wear.

Technical Performance

The FTX9217 portal axle conversion set represents a significant engineering upgrade that transforms both the mechanical performance and visual authenticity of your FTX Outback Fury or Hi-Rock crawler. The integration of CNC-machined alloy housings throughout the front and rear axle assemblies ensures structural rigidity whilst maintaining lightweight construction. The hardened steel drive gears, combined with ball-bearing support on all shafts, create a drivetrain built for the demands of serious trail work, technical rock crawling, and extended outdoor use. The portal axle geometry itself is the key to this conversion's effectiveness—by raising the axle housing above the wheel centre, it increases ground clearance without requiring oversized tyres, a critical advantage when navigating rocky obstacles, steep ascents, and challenging terrain. The altered gear ratio at each wheel improves torque output and low-speed control, enabling precise speed management on technical sections and enhanced climbing ability on vertical obstacles. The front CVA driveshafts provide the articulation necessary for extreme suspension travel whilst maintaining constant power delivery. The CNC steering bar and C-hubs ensure precision steering response, whilst the included Panhard bar stabilises axle movement and maintains proper steering geometry throughout the range of suspension travel. For users planning to mount this conversion on an Element Enduro platform, the system offers excellent compatibility when the steering bar is mounted at the front. Important to note: this conversion is not compatible with any model featuring a reverse drive design, so users should verify their platform compatibility before purchase. The complete system has been designed as a cohesive package where all components work together to deliver authentic scale geometry alongside genuine performance improvements that make a measurable difference in how your crawler handles demanding terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a portal axle and why would I want one for my RC crawler? — A portal axle is a gear reduction system where the differential is mounted above the wheel axle line, creating a compact, high-ground-clearance axle assembly. Portal axles serve two critical purposes: they raise the axle housing above the wheel centre to increase ground clearance without requiring larger tyres, and they alter the final gear ratio at each wheel to improve torque output and low-speed control. For trail crawlers and rock crawlers, this means improved ability to tackle steep obstacles, better articulation, and more authentic scale appearance. If you're serious about trail performance or scale realism in your RC crawler UK setup, a portal axle conversion is one of the most impactful upgrades available.
  • Will this fit my FTX Outback Fury or Hi-Rock? — Yes, the FTX9217 is designed specifically for direct fitment to the FTX Outback Fury and FTX Hi-Rock 1/10 trail crawlers. It is also compatible with the Element Enduro platform if the steering bar is mounted at the front. However, this conversion is not compatible with any model featuring a reverse drive design, so if your model has reverse drive capability, this kit will not work.
  • Can I use this on any other FTX models? — The primary compatibility is with the FTX Outback Fury and Hi-Rock platforms. Users have reported successful installations on the Outback Fury XTreme variant. The conversion can be adapted for the Element Enduro platform with front-mounted steering bar configuration. For other FTX models, compatibility would need to be verified, as the conversion is engineered specifically for these platforms.
  • What tools and skills do I need to install this conversion? — Installation of this portal axle conversion requires mechanical knowledge and proper tools for disassembly of the existing drivetrain and careful installation of the new components. This is not a beginner-level modification—it requires understanding of RC crawler assembly, suspension geometry, and drivetrain mechanics. Many users choose to have experienced RC specialists perform the installation to ensure proper alignment and setup. If you're experienced with RC car assembly and have completed previous drivetrain modifications, you should be capable of handling this installation.
  • What servo torque do I need for the Panhard bar? — Some users report that the sprung Panhard bar design benefits from a high-torque servo, with 30kg minimum recommended for optimal steering response. The Panhard bar's primary function is to stabilise axle movement and maintain steering geometry, but if you experience steering translation (where steering input causes sideways chassis movement), upgrading to a 30kg+ torque servo should resolve the issue.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — No, this conversion kit is aimed at experienced RC enthusiasts and skilled builders. It requires significant mechanical knowledge, proper tools, and understanding of crawler geometry and drivetrain systems. If you're new to RC crawlers, we recommend starting with a ready-to-run RC car UK model and learning basic maintenance before attempting major conversions like this.
  • Will this void my warranty? — Installation of aftermarket conversion kits may affect manufacturer warranty coverage. Please check with FTX or your retailer regarding warranty implications before proceeding with installation.
  • What is the difference between portal axles and standard axles? — Standard axles position the differential at the wheel axle line, whilst portal axles place the differential above the wheel axle line. This raises ground clearance, improves scale appearance, and alters the final gear ratio for improved torque and low-speed control. Portal axles are the gold standard for scale crawlers and serious trail platforms, whilst standard axles are found on more basic or racing-oriented crawlers.
  • How much does this improve ground clearance? — The FTX9217 creates a significant increase in distance between the axle housing and the ground compared to standard axles, improving clearance for rocks, roots, and obstacles. The exact increase depends on your current setup, but the portal geometry makes a noticeable visual and functional difference in terrain capability.
